Set up camera and notification permissions in the Pleo mobile app

Learn how to enable camera and notification permissions during onboarding, so you can scan receipts and get important updates.

Overview

When you install the Pleo mobile app for the first time, you may be asked to allow:

  • Camera access (so you can scan receipts and take photos for expenses)
  • Notifications (so you can get important updates and reminders)

If you skip either permission during onboarding, you can turn it on later in your phone settings.

Before you start: Update the Pleo app to the latest version from the App Store (iOS) or Google Play (Android), and make sure you can access your phone’s settings

Enable camera access

Camera access lets you take photos in the app (for example, to capture receipts on the go).

  1. When you see the camera permission prompt, tap Allow (or While using the app, depending on your device)
  2. Continue onboarding in the Pleo app

If you accidentally blocked camera access

On iOS

  1. Open Settings
  2. Scroll down and tap Pleo
  3. Turn Camera on

On Android

  1. Open Settings
  2. Tap Apps (or Apps & notifications)
  3. Tap Pleo
  4. Tap Permissions
  5. Turn Camera on

If you don’t allow camera access, you can still complete onboarding — but you won’t be able to take receipt photos in the app until you enable it

Enable notifications

Notifications help you stay on top of important updates in Pleo (for example, reminders related to purchases or expenses).

  1. When you see the notification prompt, tap Allow
  2. Continue onboarding in the Pleo app

If you accidentally blocked notifications

On iOS

  1. Open Settings
  2. Tap Notifications
  3. Tap Pleo
  4. Turn Allow Notifications on

On Android

  1. Open Settings
  2. Tap Apps (or Apps & notifications)
  3. Tap Pleo
  4. Tap Notifications
  5. Turn notifications on

Good to know: If you want fewer alerts, keep notifications enabled and adjust the notification style (like sounds or banners) in your phone settings

Troubleshooting

I don’t see a permission prompt during onboarding

  • Finish onboarding first, then enable the permission from your phone settings (steps above)
  • If you’re trying to use a feature that needs camera access (like receipt capture), start that flow again — your phone may show the prompt then

Camera access is enabled but it still doesn’t work

  • Close and reopen the Pleo app, then try again
  • Restart your phone and try again
  • Check whether your phone has any device-wide restrictions that block camera use

Notifications are enabled but I’m not receiving any

Battery Saver Mode
  • Why notifications don't show: When battery saver (or Low Power Mode) is active, the OS restricts background data synchronisation, throttles processor usage, and holds non-critical push notifications until the phone is plugged in or the mode is switched off.
  • How to fix / workaround:
    1. iPhone: Switch off Low Power Mode.
    2. Android: Switch off Battery Saver
Do Not Disturb / Focus Modes
  • Why notifications don't show: These features silence incoming alerts, banners, and sounds to minimise distractions. Notifications are diverted silently to the notification centre or held for a scheduled summary.
  • How to fix / workaround:
    1. iPhone: Turn off the focus mode or add Pleo to Allow Notifications From.
    2. Android: Turn off the focus mode or add Pleo as an approved exception.
Network State
  • Why notifications don't show: Push notifications rely on a continuous internet connection. Weak mobile data signals, switching between Wi-Fi and mobile data (network handoff), or unauthenticated public Wi-Fi networks (captive portals requiring browser login) temporarily break the connection needed to deliver notifications.
  • How to fix / workaround:
    1. Switch Airplane Mode (or Flight Mode) on for 5 seconds and back off to reset your network connection.
    2. If connected to public Wi-Fi, open your web browser to sign in, or switch off Wi-Fi to switch directly to mobile data.
    3. Verify Pleo has network permissions enabled in your phones settings
Device Idle (Android Doze Mode)
  • What Doze Mode is: A built-in Android power management feature that puts your device into a deep sleep state when it sits stationary, unplugged, and with the screen off for an extended period.
  • Why notifications don't show: Doze mode defers network access and holds normal-priority push notifications until the device enters periodic "maintenance windows" or is physically moved.
  • How to fix / workaround:
    1. Set the battery management option to Unrestricted (or disable Optimise battery usage for Pleo).
App Background Restrictions
  • Why notifications don't show: Mobile operating systems track app usage habits. If Pleo hasn't been opened in several days or weeks, the OS marks it as "inactive" or "hibernated", revoking its background data rights and suppressing push notifications.
  • How to fix / workaround:
    1. Open the Pleo app at least once a week to keep its system status active.
    2. iPhone: Ensure Background App Refresh is switched On for Pleo.
    3. Android: Disable Pause app activity if unused or Remove permissions if app is unused.
Push Provider Queuing
  • Why notifications don't show: Pleo sends notifications through third-party platform servers (APNs for Apple, FCM for Google) before they reach your device. High system load, infrastructure outages, or server queue delays at Apple or Google can hold up delivery regardless of your phone settings.
  • How to fix / workaround:
    1. Check the Apple System Status page (for APNs) or the Google Cloud Status Dashboard (for FCM) to see if push delivery services are experiencing widespread delays.
    2. Keep both the Pleo app and your device operating system updated to the latest versions to maintain compatible push protocols.
